Ebola Virus Scare

Ebola VirusRecent news has been full of information and misinformation about the Ebola virus.

the important principles to get hold of are the following.

The disease is largely localized in western Africa.

There have been many outbreaks, albeit it, smaller in the past and they have remained localized.

The disease is largely passed only by direct close contact. So unless you are sleeping with or holding a Ebola infected patient it is unlikely you will be affected.

The disease is usually only capable of being passed from person to person when the infected person is sick and has a fever. Exceptions to this may apply, remember Typhoid Mary.

Unfortunately  the therapy for the infection is basically just supportive. Meaning fluids, tylenol, blood replacement, iv fluids, and comfort care and pain meds. There is no specific antiviral therapy at present.

There is no vaccine

The good news is that unless you travel to western Africa the chances of getting Ebola are extremely remote. So support efforts in Africa to resolve the epidemic there and say thanks that you live in a safe area.
